Make your drum loops come alive

Make your drum loops come alive the easy way

On the message boards and forums i notice a lot of newbies for some reason are using the  same, hit foreach drum hit in there drum set for the entire song. Do not let that be you! One of the best things we can do as  edm producers is try our best to think like drummers and do what they would do.

One thing to keep in mind is drummers have 2 arms and two legs so they will not be able to hit a tom drum a high hat a side stick a bongo and a snare all at the same time! Im sure you have seen these songs in the forums or on soundcloud.com and you were asking yourself is the person for real or what???

Make a loop for each phrase

So the thing to do to sound natural is to have a drum loop for each section:
A drum loop for intro
a drum loop for drop
a drum loop for the risde
a drum loop for pre chorus
a drum loop for the first verse
a drum loop when the first arp comes in
a drum loop for the main chorus
a drum loop for the middle 8th section
a drum loop for the reprise
a drum loop for the buildups
and a drum loop for the outro.

most songs without getting to technical or robotic its never a good thing to get too robotic but a good rule of thumb is to have a change a new phrase at bars 17,33,41 or 49,65 73 or 81 and so forth if you are doing four bar phrases.

So you get the picture it may take you longer to produce your song but in the end your song will sound so much better and natural sounding. Rather than just putting a kick on the 2s and snare on the 4s and just going boom boom the whole track that can get real boring real quick.

So take it from me be more creative and have some fun.
one last thing do not forget to add some groove shuffle and swing to get the real syncopation going then your gold!

I uploaded a short video below  to show you what im talking about  if  you have any questions just leave your comments in comment section.

How to speed up your hip hop beatmaking workflow when you have no time to make beats

We all been there, we have a idea in our head of some beat we want to cook up, then the unthinkable happens. We run into our ex at the bank, the supermarket or Wendys drive thru then the two of you start talking for hours. Or better yet, your kid gets sick at school the nurse sends him home, your dog has an appointment at the vet. You need to help your son study for a math test...As soon as you walk into the studio your girl calls you up, and silly you answers the phone. You then are sitting in your own studio, instead of making beats you are talking on the phone. Before you know it you start falling asleep and no beats are made! You get the picture. This happens to all of us at one point or another in time. Some of us it happens on a more consistent basis. So that is why i made this video for you to help give you some insight as to what to do, when life sometimes gets in your way, and you are unable to make any beats. So follow my suggestions in the video and i hope you...

the original edm bands from back in the day

What happened to the original  edm pioneers. Growing up in the 70s and 80s I was a product of mtv and was into the underground club scene.Though I started out in the school band and playing instruments, then led to djing, and mix tapes  ,break dancing the whole nine you name it,I was doing it. For quite a while I was into freestyle in the 80s. Then all of the sudden something came over me and I just fell in love with  techno for some reason and of course the progressive house/trance movement in the middle to late nineties. I used to be a clubkid I would go to all the clubs  from limelight, tunnel, sound factory, tequila Joes, loop lounge, shelter, temptations,Bahama mamas, lana lounge just to name a few as you can see I pretty much a club kid. I think I was the only guy in the club who was not high as I only went there for the music and to dance! Sure guys came up to me and asked me if I needed anything but ,I just said no! The music was my high Rea...
