Music theory in edm music

Using two chord progressions in edm

If you have heard any of my music by now you know im a fan of music theory! Not only does music theory make your music come alive, but without it ,without knowing it you cant break the rules and create some hands in the air music to get people going crazy on the dance floor. Or just get people going crazy about your music in the first place.

So what i done here in this video is show you a simple trick to get  a certain vibe going or to create some tension in your music. All you have to do is create two chord progressions!  Yes thats it! The trick is to not just create anyone they have to be in same key same scale etc for it to sound good. So choose a first and a third
or the tonic and the fourth whatever you decide. Just make sure it sounds good.

About the sound

So in the video i basically just show you one loop in gmaj then another in c-minor. I did not program a full on intro or anything i just have the loops in session view to show you as an example,i also did not program a full 32 bar loop both of these are 4 bar loops just looped again for the example. Had this been an actual song i would have programmed a evolving 32-64 bar main riff but thats for another tv show.

So back to the video pay close attention to your emotion and how you feel when the cmajor lead comes in and how you'd feel if you hear it in a club or in your radio a dance floor you'd be going wild.
So do yourself a favor and start using music theory in your tracks! You will be asking yourself what took me so long!

the original edm bands from back in the day

What happened to the original  edm pioneers. Growing up in the 70s and 80s I was a product of mtv and was into the underground club scene.Though I started out in the school band and playing instruments, then led to djing, and mix tapes  ,break dancing the whole nine you name it,I was doing it. For quite a while I was into freestyle in the 80s. Then all of the sudden something came over me and I just fell in love with  techno for some reason and of course the progressive house/trance movement in the middle to late nineties. I used to be a clubkid I would go to all the clubs  from limelight, tunnel, sound factory, tequila Joes, loop lounge, shelter, temptations,Bahama mamas, lana lounge just to name a few as you can see I pretty much a club kid. I think I was the only guy in the club who was not high as I only went there for the music and to dance! Sure guys came up to me and asked me if I needed anything but ,I just said no! The music was my high Rea...

The Call and Response in edm

When you produce any type of music there will be times where you either draw a blank! Or you need something for a section, something unique ,something different.Something unique. Maybe you just want to add some tension to a otherwise boring song. Maybe you are working on a remix contest and want to stand out from the rest! Whatever the case is no matter what you are working on,theres one thing you can go to everytime to spice up any track. Its called the call and response. How does it work  You cannot mess with science this pretty much will work every time.So how does it work? What does it sound like? The truth is you’ve allready heard it millions ,countless times already . You just may not have been producing or composing or arranging at the time so it was not that clear to you. Every song you hear  today on the radio in the clubs at a concert utilizes a form of call and response. The question and the answer The most common one is the question ...
